The frequency and times below are a guide only – on occasions teachers may set more frequent shorter tasks or longer less frequent tasks with a longer deadline.

Evidence shows that secondary students who complete regular high-quality home learning activities for up to 1-2 hours per day (or slightly more for older students) make on average 5 months more progress. (Education Endowment Foundation)

Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9)

English, Maths, Science, Languages (French, German, Mandarin) -  1 piece per fortnight (30-60 minutes)

History, Geography, RE, Computer Science, Art, Music, Drama,  Citizenship, Technology -  2 pieces per ½ term (30-60 minutes)

Recommended weekly learning hours at home: 5-7

Deadlines: Minimum of 3 working days

Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11)

English , Maths -  1 piece per week (45-60 minutes)

Science -  3 pieces per fortnight (45-60 minutes)

Option GCSE / BTEC Subjects - 1 piece per week (45-60 minutes)

Recommended weekly learning hours at home: 10-14

Deadlines: Minimum of 3 working days (tasks under 1 hour) or 5 working days (tasks over 1 hour)

Further Independent Study

It is recommended by the school that in order to make best progress, students also spend time on independent study in addition to specific home learning tasks.
